| There are saxophonists, and then there are players who make the instrument sing in a voice you'd recognise anywhere. Dave O'Higgins - born in 1964, an English jazz saxophonist, composer, arranger and educator - first emerged on the British jazz scene in the 1980s and has spent the four decades since at its very front rank. His grounding reads like a masterclass in how a great jazz musician is made. After three years in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, O'Higgins joined the band of Jim Mullen before moving on to play with Martin Taylor - a pedigree that put him alongside the finest players Britain had to offer before he was thirty. With 26 albums as leader to his credit, his tenor and soprano sound instantly recognisable for its melodic clarity and effortless flow. With an excellent sense of pacing and presentation, Dave has a wide palette from Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane and Joe Henderson through to Stanley Turrentine and Michael Brecker. In this show - “Take the Coltrane” – Dave presents Coltrane’s musical journey from standards and hard bop through to the reharmonizations, modal and spiritual experiments of later years. The show began as a curated night at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in London, and has enjoyed sell-out shows regularly since then. Graham Harvey (piano), Jeremy Brown (bass) and Matt Skelton (drums) are regular collaborators with the sufficient stylistic breadth to take you from elegantly crafted 50’s bop to impassioned “sheets of sound”.
